Your brain does more than process thoughts or operate your mind.
Your brain is in charge of the outgoing stuff: everything you think, say, and do, as well as the incoming: how you perceive the world and the things that are happening around you. Paying attention to the outbound is something that gets talked about quite often; knowing that we have more control over how the inbound impacts us is less commonly discussed.
Making an active choice to think and talk in positive terms will allow you to see clearly and build confidence. This can be difficult. You have to work hard to find the positives, but when you do, you’ll see that you feel better.
When the two voices in your head – the positive and negative inner talk tracks- – start to fight, actively note the positive one. Actively is the key here. You have to be intentional about noticing the two and pushing (gently) the negative voice aside in order to give room for the positive to have the last word. Recognizing that individuals have some control over the the way they think is a big step toward growing more confident.
